Long Island Week Ahead Very Warm Humid Into Wednesday Unsettled Late Week

Islip hit 90 degrees for the first time at 11am but then the wind shifted from west to southwest and that was it as far as the high was concerned. Temperatures remained in the mid to upper 80s. Some areas north of the Long Island expressway made it few degrees higher. It was a hot and moderately humid day. The satellite picture this evening shows a few strands of clouds but no shower or thunderstorm activity is going on. It will be a warm and humid night with most lows in the 60s.

The next cold front is not due until late Wednesday but we do have weak disturbances to contend with. Monday’s issue will be the wind direct which will be mostly south south west off the chilly 60 degree ocean so that will keep temperatures down a bit, 80s inland and 70s at the beaches.

A weak disturbance could trigger an isolated shower or thunderstorm north of NYC but I think Long Island will remain free and clear of any issues Monday. Tuesday will be very warm and humid as dew points continue to go higher. Clouds and some sun will be the rule and there is the chance for scattered late day showers or a thunderstorm. Highs will be mostly in the 80s with 70s at the coast.

Wednesday we have a back door cold front approaching and another very warm and humid day ahead of it with highs in the 80s and the chance for late showers or a thunderstorm. Wind direction will drive whether the thunderstorms are something to contend with or fall apart. The front is going to stall overhead or just to the south keeping us sticky Thursday with the chance for a shower and highs just into the 80s. Then as a wave develops on the front look for rain Thursday night and Friday. While there might be some breaks in between, more rain is coming for later Friday into the first part of Saturday until the last wave of low pressure moves out to the east. Temperatures will cool off at the end of the week, possibly dropping into the 60s with an onshore wind. This will be among the forecast challenges for the upcoming week.
