Heavy Rain Exits But Leftover Doom & Gloom Clouds Into Early Saturday

Overnight heavy rains have produced some flooding across Eastern Pennsylvania to Southern New England as we pick up another inch to 2 inches of rain in some places. Low pressure is offshore and as the gfs model above shows, it does move out to the east this morning. However we still have an upper low to the west and south of us that needs to play through and that will take another day and a half to accomplish. In the meantime while the heavy rain exits, there will still be some on and off rain from time to time later today and tonight.

Through all of this it has been soupy mild and temperatures today will be mostly in the low to middle 50s which is 10 to 15 degrees above average for this time of year. Rainfall from this system adds to already very high totals and that is making this December the wettest on record for some places in the Northeast and Northern Mid Atlantic and the final totals are not in yet. If they aren’t the wettest they are certainly in the top five wettest Decembers.

What I refer to as doom and gloom conditions continue tonight into Friday and there still could be some on and off rain though it will be on the light side. Otherwise we will see lots of clouds tonight and Friday with temperatures a little lower than today, upper 40s and lower 50s should do it.

Finally on Saturday we get a noteable change in the upper air flow as well as the low level flow. Northwest winds kick in and we should see leftover clouds giving way to some developing sunshine. The air coming in will take us back down close to or a little above average for this time of year. Saturday highs will be in the low to middle 40s.

Sunday is New Year’s Eve and we see see no weather issues to speak of both during the day and Sunday night when many will be out and about. The day Sunday should be nice with no worse than partly sunny skies and highs will be in the low to mid 40s.  A cold front will be approaching and moving through Monday New Year’s Day but the front has nothing much with it other than a wind shift and slightly colder air behind it. So we will call it no worse than partly sunny skies for New Year’s Day and highs will be in the low to mid 40s. Much if not all of next week will be dry and uneventful and the snow drought continues with no end in sight as the pattern across much of the US remains unfavorable for cold and snowy weather.
