Frigid Temperatures Wind Chill Snow Freezing Rain Monday

It is another day of frigid temperatures wind chill and deep snow cover across the new arctic tundra. Temperatures this morning are sitting in the single digits everywhere and inland areas bottomed below zero. The wind continues to howl from the west northwest and though we have tons of sunshine today, that sun will be completely ineffective with highs just in the upper single digits and lower teens. The satellite loop shows the effect of the cold air over the relatively warmer ocean with streaks of clouds offshore but clear skies along the coast and just inland. To the west we see clouds coming through the Rockies which is the leading edge of warmer air pushing east and that warmer air will begin to arrive on Monday.

Tonight will be brutal with lows below zero in many areas to the low single digits in the warmest urban areas. It would be below zero everywhere but the wind may still be too busy to allow that to happen. Sunday will be another very cold day with sunshine though clouds could arrive late in the afternoon. It will be somewhat less harsh on Sunday with highs mostly in the teens.

The warmer air arrives Monday ahead of a weak front. This will create a bit of overrunning precipitation probably in the form of some snow and freezing rain. This looks to be on the light side at the moment however with the very cold ground temperatures and the snow cover air temperatures may have a tough time getting above freezing in most areas so even some light precipitation could make for a slick evening rush hour on Monday. Precipitation is forecast to move through during the mid afternoon to early evening. Temperatures should make a stab at the 30s. Since this system should be on the weak side once it is done, the air behind it is not all that cold so we should be back into the upper 30s and lower 40s on Tuesday with clouds and some sun which will feel so much better.
