Flood Watch Saturday Long Island 2 to 3 Inches Of Rain Possible

Rising Coastal Tides Into Monday

We have a very juiced up storm system moving toward Florida this evening. This storm will turn northward up the East Coast bringing with it ton of gulf moisture and then getting juiced up again with Atlantic moisture. Flood Watches are posted for Long Island and nearby surrounding areas back to NYC, New Jersey as well as the Lower Hudson Valley and Connecticut. 2 to 3 inches of rain seems likely and it would not be a shock if we see amounts locally higher.

There are no weather issues for the remainder of the day as we see sunshine fading and clouds increasing from south to north. A system in the Great Lakes is pushing eastward at the same time and that is spreading snow through Upstate NY and into New England. Our low moving through the Gulf of Mexico will become the primary system tonight and then strengthen some as it heads northward to off the New Jersey coast later Saturday. Temperatures are in the chilly 40s and will likely hold there overnight. Rain develops during the early morning hours bafore day break.

The area of rain will expand during the morning hours Saturday and then an area of heavy rain develops over Delaware and New Jersey and moves over Long Island after lunch time Saturday. The heaviest rain will fall between 1pm and 8pm as the low begins to slide to the east. Temperatures will likely rise into the 50s as southeast winds pick up to 20 to 30 mph with some higher gusts.

Winds will probably be just below wind advisory criteria however the southeast flow will drive tides higher. Fortunately the tides Saturday afternoon will be at the low part of the cycle so we should avoid any serious coastal flooding. However with an onshore flow continuing Sunday and into early next week, we could see coastal flooding issues Sunday and Monday. We also have a full moon Sunday night and the peak tide is going to be reached Monday. Rain will end in the evening and we should see skies clearing out overnight. Sunday will be dry with some sunshine and a gusty north to northeast wind. Highs Sunday will be in the mid to upper 40s. Next week should start dry and stay dry at least through Tuesday.
