Flood Watch New Jersey to Southeast New England, Heavy Rain
Weekend Brings Another Storm
Gloom & doom continue and after yesterday’s rainfall the ground is saturated. Today will be the third time in 5 days we have seen rain in Eastern Pennsylvania to Southern New England and this next system threatens to bring flooding issues. Flood watches are up for most of New Jersey (except the western and southernmost counties), New York City, Long Island, the Hudson Valley east to Southern and Southeastern New England.
Rainfall amounts will be in the inch to 2 inch range but some areas especially from Connecticut and Long Island eastward will see 2 to 3 inches. The threshold for flooding is not very high given the wet conditions of the last 5 days. Satellite loops show clouds increasing quickly from southwest to northeast as low pressure heads out of the Southeast US and moves up the East Coast today. Rain develops from south to north from mid morning to mid afternoon and becomes heavy at times going into this evening.

This low tracking up the coast will bring an arm of rain in from off the ocean this afternoon so we may go to a steady rain and it will become heavy at times. The rain will fill in across the Northeast and Northern Mid Atlantic states rather quickly. The low center itself will track up the coast emerging just offshore of New Jersey and south of Long Island tonight. Winds off the ocean will likely keep temperatures in the upper 40s and lower 50s.
The steady heavy rain will shift to Southeastern New England overnight and that will leave much of the area with lots of clouds. There could be some lingering patches of rain or showers during the day Thursday so we do not expect much improvement in sky conditions until Thursday night when high pressure starts to build in. Thursday highs should reach the low to mid 50s away from immediate coastal areas.
Friday we should see a nice day with some sunshine (whatever that is) and temperatures that will be topping out in the low to middle 50s. However attention turns to the west where the next (and the last) storm system in this recent series heads our way. This low is going to track toward the Great Lakes with a trailing cold front. Clouds will increase Friday night and during the day Saturday, showery rains will develop later in the day.
The bulk of any rain will be from late Saturday into early Sunday morning and it looks to be a system that moves rather quickly with a 6 to 8 hour period of heavy rain. Then as the low moves offshore the Gulf of Maine the system will strengthen and we will see increasing winds developing later Sunday into Monday. In fact winds could gust to 40 mph or more Sunday night into Monday morning as the pressure gradient tightens up considerably. We will see drier and colder conditions developing during the day Sunday. Next week looks to be the opposite of this week in that we will likely be dry at least into Thursday.
