Excessive Heat Warnings Next 4 Days Record Highs Possible
Today begins the excessive heat that has been so well advertised for days. Overnight we had an upper trough move through and parts of the area from the Hudson Valley to Long Island had thunderstorms roll by before daybreak. That only adds to the humidity and now we will see excessive heat. Warnings are posted from Maine to Virginia west to the Ohio Valley so everyone from Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, & New England will see highs today reach the mid to upper 90s today. Sunshine will be abundant and humidity levels will be quite high so it will likely feel as if it is over 100 degrees today.
SATELLITE WITH LIGHTNING STRIKES
WEATHER RADAR
Do to the structure of the upper ridge over the Middle Atlantic states, we have upper air disturbances from the Plains moving over the top of that ridge in the Northern Great Lakes and then they drop southeastward through New York State and New England. The next such upper trough is due to arrive late this afternoon and evening so we do run the risk of all that daytime heating contributing to thunderstorms developing late this afternoon and evening.
I’m not expecting to see a line of storms but we could see some clusters and pop ups developing. The Storm Prediction Center is indicating there is a risk for severe storms. A marginal risk for isolated severe storms extends down into Southeast Pennsylvania and Central New Jersey. Risks are higher from extreme northwest New Jersey, Northeast Pennsylvania and the Hudson Valley north and northeast into Western and Northern New England.
Thursday and Friday look to be the hottest of this heatwave stretch as we will have the upper high virtually overhead. Thunderstorms will be virtually non existent with the ridge near the coast. Sinking down-sloping air on west and northwest winds means little chance of a sea breeze except if you are standing perhaps right on the shore lines. Highs both Thursday and Friday will reach 100 to 105 degrees, heat indices will reach 110 or more in some areas.
The risk for scattered storms does come back later Friday afternoon. The upper ridge will begin to deflate somewhat over the weekend, still there in the Mid Atlantic but not quite as strong. Saturday we will see highs in the upper 90s to low 100s with sunshine. The 4th of July does have thunderstorm risk to the picture and we might even have some risk for severe weather though that will be determined in the next few days. Sunday we see sunshine hot and humid conditions though highs will be in the low to mid 90s and there will be some showers and storms developing ahead of another upper trough and weather front. Overall this evening much of the time over the holiday weekend will be rain free but plan accordingly and watch the radars.
