Dry Week, Warmer Temperatures Hopefully No Rain for the Weekend

The work week begins on the cool side today as the weekend storm system continues to pull away to the northeast and cool high pressure builds in the Eastern US both at the surface and aloft and that means that once the high moves overhead and offshore, the cool air moves out and we begin a warm up in temperatures that will take us through the rest of the week.

Sunshine this afternoon will take temperatures to the upper 50s and lower 60s. Other than a few passing clouds there will be no rain issues. Then tonight under clear skies and lighter winds, especially inland, lows will be in the 40s but colder spots inland will be in the 30s and some patchy frost is likely in parts of the Hudson Valley, as well as Northeast Pennsylvania and the Catskills and possibly Northwest New Jersey.

During Tuesday the high moves overhead and offshore. We will see a nice day of sunshine. After the chilly start temperatures will rise into the 60s everywhere. Radars will be nice and quiet and no rain. After Tuesday we will head into the warmer part of the week.

Typically this time of year, the first push of colder air masses tends to be more in the Western US rather than in the East and we are likely to see the first 2 weather systems that will produce snow. The first will be Wednesday night into Friday across the Northern Rockies and Plains. A second system will follow that will produce snow in the Central Rockies northeast into the North Central Plains.

In the Eastern US however it is all about the ridge off the Southeast US coast and a west to southwest flow of warmer air. Above normal temperatures will take hold Wednesday, likely lasting through the weekend. The ridge keeps fronts from making progress into the Eastern US. Wednesday sunshine will take highs in the upper 60s and lower 70s. Thursday and Friday we will see highs in the low to mid 70s.

While sunshine dominates the weather during the day, warm patterns this time of year usually lead to nights with low clouds and fog so we will need to watch out for that especially late week. Friday highs will be in the 70s with sunshine. The weekend right now looks like it could be very warm and if the ridge holds, the next important weather front may not get here until early next week. That may mean the first weekend in 8 where we don’t have rain issues on one or both weekend day.
