Weekend Looks Dry As Helene Stays South

We are in between weather systems today with a high from Atlantic Canada wedged in between. Clouds from the next cold front to the west are streaming eastward and we have low clouds from the east that came in overnight so between the two, we will likely see cloudy to occasionally partly sunny conditions. Rain should not be an issue as the radars aren’t showing much at the moment. High temperatures from Eastern Pennsylvania to Southern New England will be in the upper 60s and lower 70s.

As we move into tonight and Wednesday look for more clouds and then a cold front will approach from the west with showers developing in the afternoon and evening. The bulk of the shower activity probably passes west of the coast and the rainfall also doesn’t amount to much. As for temperatures we should see highs reach the upper 60s along the coast with low to a few mid 70s inland.

The front will slow down as it nears the coast and that is due to what will likely be Hurricane Helene in the Eastern Gulf of Mexico. The outflow from the developing hurricane slows the front down until the hurricane moves inland Thursday night and then the front will pass to the east. Behind the front, building high pressure across the Great Lakes and New England will be acting as a block. This should prevent moisture from any tropical storm or hurricane from eventually finding its way up to the Northeastern US.

This probably leaves us in clouds for Thursday along with some occasional showers. Winds will be from the west so for the first time in almost a week, the onshore flow will be gone. Temperatures will respond by climbing some and highs Thursday will reach the mid to upper 70s even along coastal areas.

The next dome of high pressure builds in from the Great Lakes to Atlantic Canada from Friday through the weekend. This will bring back the onshore flow. As to day to day sky conditions, for now we will say that Friday, Saturday and Sunday should be rain free and there should be some sunshine each day, though high clouds probably push up from the south veiling the sun from time to time. Ocean winds are back and that means most daytime highs will be in the 70s inland and 60s along the coast. No rain is forecast Friday through Sunday at this time.
