Cold Front Brings Rain Friday Night Into Saturday & Then Colder Air Arrives

Today is another warm and humid day across Eastern Pennsylvania to Southern New England. The flow will be more southeast today which will actually hold temperatures down somewhat. There are clouds to the west and they are with the next cold front. Today will be sticky with high dew points and there will be some sunshine to take temperatures to the mid 70s to around 80 degrees for highs.

Three features that stand out on the satellite loop are the cold front to the west, Tropical Storm Philippe which is sitting well to the southeast on the lower right of the loop in the Atlantic, and an upper low that is rotating off the North Carolina coast. The front will be moving along to the east. The upper low will cause a non tropical storm to develop offshore. This may or may not absorb Philippe but it really doesn’t make much of a difference to the outcome. The developing offshore low will head to Eastern New England Friday night and Saturday. This will likely bring heavy rains and the potential for flash flooding for North Central and Northeastern NY, as well as Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine.

The southern edge of the heavier rain will probably just clip Northern New Jersey to NYC and Long island with 1/2 to 3/4 inch rainfalls likely, higher to the north and lower to the south.

Friday we will see increasing clouds with some scattered showers around and highs will be in the 70s. Showers will become more numerous Friday night into Saturday though it won’t be continuous and there will be some breaks in between. The front will pass through late Saturday and rain or showers will come to an end from west to east.

Meanwhile as the coastal storm/Philppe passes to the east, it will strengthen as it reaches the Gulf of Maine. Once the front passes winds will increase sharply Saturday night and Sunday from the northwest. We could see gusts of 30 mph and possibly higher. We could be at a low end wind advisory criteria for Sunday. While the rain will still be going in in Upstate New York and Northern New England, we will see gusty winds, leftover clouds and some sun for Sunday and the low chance for a scattered shower or two. Temperatures will be very chilly. Highs Sunday will be in the 50s to around 60 at best.

Next week will be opposite of this week as we will be getting our air from Eastern Canada and the weekend storm will basically remain stationary in Eastern Canada and spin around for at least a few days. Monday will be chilly with clouds and some sun with highs again in the 50s. Another cold front will approach and that could bring clouds Tuesday and maybe a few showers late Tuesday or Tuesday night. This front will pass and another re-enforcement of dry cool air will come in for the second half of next week.
