Coastal Storm Will Influence Our Weather Next Few Days

We will be under the influence of a coastal storm that moved off the North Carolina coast last night. It will be moving at a snails pace over the next few days thanks to a blocking pattern in the North Atlantic. With the storm offshore we will be under the western edge of its circulation into Friday. At time dry air comes down from the northeast as it did today and we have sunshine. Actually we are enjoying a rather nice day with fewer clouds but there is a bit of a chill in the air. Highs should make it back into the 50s this afternoon.

The dry air patch shows up quite well on the satellite picture. There isn’t much in the way of precipitation on the radar but what is there is moving counter clockwise from northeast to southwest and that tells the story of how the weather evolves for the rest of the week.

Eventually clouds will come back from the northeast as the simulated satellite loop of the GFS model shows. Clouds will probably hold off tonight but should start to move in during the day Thursday.

Then the question becomes whether rain comes in from the northeast. We usually look to the west for rain but in a blocking pattern like this we have to look northeast as the rain rotates in on the backside of the storm. We will not see any rain on Thursday and we could have enough early sun to send temperatures into the 50s for highs.

By Thursday night the NAM has rain approaching Long Island from the east. Usually in situations like this the rain tends to weaken as it moves southward but it is my view that the models might be weakening the rain a bit too fast. Nonetheless coastal areas of New Jersey and from NYC north and east could see a little rain here Thursday night into Friday morning while further inland lots of clouds are likely but the rain should stay to the east.

After Friday morning weather conditions should slowly improve though clouds will be around at least through the morning. The coastal storm will move southeast and then finally move east and further offshore; enough so that we will see some clearing of skies later in the day and we should have better weather conditions over the weekend.

We will have high pressure sandwiching in between the coastal storm which by Saturday will be well offshore, and a weakening system approaching the Great Lakes. I think Saturday we should see some sunshine with highs in the 50s. Sunday we will see clouds and sun and temperatures should edge higher. With a little luck we will reach into the 60s. Both days will see cooler temperatures along shore locations. We should see temperatures into the 60s next Monday and Tuesday and will be looking it to be dry on Monday. Perhaps some showers come onto the scene on Tuesday.
