Cloudy Saturday With Rain or Showers Sunday Looks Nice Warm

Week Ahead Outlook

We do have some rain to deal with today but it is coming from two separate systems. One is wobbling northward along the coast and we can see a northeast southwest arc of rain from off the ocean into New Jersey. That area of rain is moving northward. Meanwhile to the west we have a cold front with some showers that will move across Pennsylvania and NY State today. Then we have the area between the two which may not see much rain from either one of these systems

This is going to lead to a very wide range of rainfall where from Coastal New Jersey northward to Southern New England and Long Island could see an inch or more while amounts drop considerably as we go west. Some models are forecasting 2 inch plus amounts in parts of Southern New England but it really will be a matter of watching the radar. Sometimes these ocean source systems tend to outperform.

While all this is going on the area in the middle from Western New Jersey to the Hudson Valley and into the Catskills and Eastern Pennsylvania will not see much of anything rain wise and just sit in clouds most of the day. Temperatures today will range from the mid to upper 60s along the coast and in areas that are getting rain from the southern system while inland it could reach 70 to 75.

As the NAM model loop above shows this all moves out to the east tonight and skies should start to clear out from west to east during the early morning hours. Most lows tonight will be in the low to mid 50s. Sunday will be a nice sunny day. As it often happens this time of year weather behind cold fronts wind up being warmer than the air ahead. Sunday highs will reach the mid to upper 70s except for local sea breezes at the shore keeping temperatures there in the cooler 60s.

Looking ahead to next week which will culminate with the Memorial Day holiday weekend, let me just say that of the three holiday weekends which are considered part of the summer season, this is the one that we usually have the most trouble with. It is rare we have 3 days of dry weather and often times we lose one or even two days to clouds and all day rains.

Monday through Wednesday we foresee little in the way of issues. Highs pressure from the north will keep it dry and mainly sunny Monday and Tuesday with highs in the 70s. Wednesday we could see highs reach the upper 70s and lower 80s ahead of a cold front dropping southward from Canada. After that it gets a little dicey. The front pushes south as high pressure to the north begins to set up an onshore flow. From this we get lower pressures off the Southeast US coast. While it seems we could be dry Thursday and Friday, models are pointing right now to issues with clouds and rain for the holiday weekend. At this point it is too early to say how this plays out but there has been a consistency in this idea for the last several days. We will talk about this in detail Sunday on the JOE & JOE WEATHER SHOW.
