Christmas Blizzard Plains States
People in the Northern Plains this morning are waking up to a blizzard with up to a foot of snow forecast. Other Winter weather advisories and Winter Storm Warnings extend to areas back into the Rockies and eastward toward the areas bordering Lake Superior. In the meantime we have sunshine here in the east and we have a beautiful Christmas day underway. There are some clouds to the west but they should hold off until tonight into Monday. A warm front approaches and while some models have a little bit of precipitation with this the bulk will be going by to our west and north. I don’t expect much Monday other than arriving and thickening clouds and maybe the risk of a shower.
Other than a few showers Monday night into Tuesday morning we don’t see much happening into midweek. We are trying to figure out which weather models are going to be correct concerning Thursday. As colder air arrives the European has a period of precipitation while the GFS model has nothing of consequence.
In the longer range there is so much model volatility from run to run and from model to model that It is very hard to zero in on anything remotely specific at this point. Since everyone is wrapped up in unwrapping Christmas presents, we will examine this later today with the new round of weather models.
