Bitter Cold Air Arrives Friday For A Quick Shot of Winter But Without Snow

Winter is about to make an appearance but it will be a fleeting one and it will come with bitter cold air for the weekend. However it also comes with no snow issues. An arctic front will arrive Friday and we will see a set up that brings bitter cold air to the Northeast and Northern Middle Atlantic states. A powerful storm will form in Eastern Canada just east of Labrador and this creates a flow straight south from Western Greenland into Eastern Canada and then down the US east coast.

The good news is that this shot of bitter cold air will be short lived since there is nothing to hold that storm there. Temperatures will plummet during the day Friday and then bottom Saturday morning in the single digits to near 10 from NYC southward and it will be below zero and double digt below zero readings to the north and northeast. The bitter cold will last about a day before temperatures start to rebound.

Before that we have relatively quiet weather for the week ahead. A weak cold front is moving through tonight so ahead of it today we see clouds on the satellite loop but it should be rain free. Look for variable cloud cover. Temperatures today will be in the low to middle 50s with upper 40s well inland.

Tonight when the front passes there could be a brief shower otherwise it will come through dry and it will turn a bit colder on Tuesday. The front will stall to our south and a weak wave developing on it will pass well to our south. This will likely leave us in clouds Tuesday with high temperatures in the colder 30s to near 40.

Another wave will move through early Wednesday and that might produce a few passing snow showers mainly south of NYC. Otherwise we will see clouds around and it will be a shade colder after the wave goes by with highs just in the 30s.

Thursday sees yet another wave passing to our south and this wave eventually becomes part of that developing major storm off the coast of Eastern Canada. We will have nothing more than some clouds around Thursday with temperatures in the upper 30s and lower 40s.

The cold air arrives on Friday as temperatures settle in the 20s. There will also be a strong northerly wind that develops and that will bring wind chills in the teens and then we hit bottom Saturday morning with lows in the single digits to below zero in some places. Nothing more than passing clouds and some sun will be around Friday before skies clear. Saturday will be a very cold day with ineffective sunshine with highs in the upper teens to lower 20s. The core of the cold air will be pulling out later Saturday and temperatures will bounce higher Sunday and reach the 40s! Then the non-winter winter resumes next week.
