A Look Ahead to The Weekend & Next Tuesday Another System Drops Into the East
Lets look ahead to the weekend and next week. First off is the cold air that comes in and that will be here Friday. By Saturday morning we will be in the teens and 20s in many locations.
I added low temperature maps for the the Northeast Mid Atlantic & Southeast above. The upper air pattern is evolving into a rather dynamic looking set up for early next week. A deep trough sets up in the Eastern US on both the GFS and the European model leading to a cold weekend for sure.

The two models are remarkably similar and the European is particularly dynamic here. What strikes me is you have a deep trough along the longitude of Hawaii and a big ridge in the Atlantic around 50-55 west. This puts the trough in the Eastern US.  The amplitude on both models is rather impressive. The European model actually went whole hog last night with piling energy into the Middle Atlantic states, pointing to a strong coastal storm developing. The Gfs did not go as whole hog as the European but it does have a similar though more suppressed look.

Now obviously we are not hoisting up warning flags just yet. It does seem as if the troughs and ridges are trying to set up in the spots you would normally see them when something tries to happen in the East. I was hoping we wouldn’t be looking at this sort of stuff for another month but they come when they come. Be advised folks..the time of year for snow for the I-95 corridor is a dead set against for a whole host of reasons. The importance being climatology which shows we have seen very few snow events this time of year let alone big events. It is a different issue for areas well inland in upstate NY & New England. But as I said, they come when they come so watch what is in front of us.
