A Chill In the Air But A Big Warm Up Gets Underway

Over the Weekend Into Early Next Week

Some clouds moved in overnight and this morning and this actually helped to keep temperatures up a bit especially inland. A chilly air mass has built southward from Eastern Canada and it will be the driving force for our weather today Look for a gusty breeze at least for awhile and a good deal of sunshine. High temperatures today will be mostly in the 50s with some warm spots in Southern New Jersey and points south closer to the 60 degree mark.

Tonight with clear skies and light winds, this looks to me to be the night where we will see frosts away from the warmer urban areas. Cold spots away from these centers will likely bottom in the upper 20s and lower 30s with warmer urban centers bottoming in the 30s to around 40 degrees. Satellite & radars show mostly quiet conditions across the Northeast and Northern Mid Atlantic states and that should remain the case through Friday.

High pressure from Eastern Canada settles into the Northeast today and moves offshore Friday. This will begin the transition to a warmer air mass that will hold in place through the weekend and into early next week. Friday will be a nice finish to the week with sunshine and highs should be back into the 60s during the afternoon.

Two powerful storms will develop in the Plains. One is developing today and tonight and that heads northeast into the Great Lakes while a second one follows right behind it Friday and over the weekend. The result will be a warm front that will pass through the Northeast Saturday night and this will produce the one chance for showers over the next 5 days.

Once the warm front goes by, temperatures will respond by jumping higher Sunday and Monday. The next cold front will not arrive until sometime late Tuesday with showers and thunderstorms so this leaves us in a good spot for much of the weekend and into Monday. Saturday we will see sunshine giving way to some arriving clouds later in the day with highs in the 60s.

South and east facing shorelines will be in the 50s with a south southeast wind in play. Saturday night we will see clouds and some scattered showers into early Sunday morning. Then we should break out into sunshine from west to east Sunday especially in the afternoon. Winds will be more southwest and temperatures will climb to the middle and even some upper 70s.

Monday looks to be the warmest day of this current stretch of weather with sunshine taking highs Monday afternoon into the low and middle 80s in many locations. Local sea breezes will hold temperatures down somewhat along south and east facing shorelines.

Tuesday we have an approaching cold front but it will still be rather warm with highs a little lower than Monday. Mid 70s to lower 80s seems doable. Later in the day a cold front arrives with showers and possibly a thunderstorm or two. Drier air will follow behind the front. Above normal temperatures and below normal precipitation seems to be the set up for the long range.
