Severe Thunderstorm Risks Later Today

It is another day of severe weather risk for areas across Eastern Pennsylvania, Southeast New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and Long Island. The Storm Prediction Center has a slight risk (15 percent) for severe thunderstorms which will come late today when a cold front approaches. The risk actually is rather widespread from Northern New England to North Carolina. I would not be surprised to see an enhanced risk area being added to this.

Satellite and radar loops show that the next round of showers and thunderstorms is still well to the west so we will have plenty of time before any storms get close. It is another day of steamy conditions with lots of sunshine and very high humidity. Dew points again are running up around or even over 70 making for extreme discomfort when coupled with highs that will each the middle 90s in many locations. Only limited relief from sea breezes is offered along the immediate coast.

We will be looking for thunderstorm development across Pennsylvania this afternoon and right now expect thunderstorm risk between 4 and 10pm. There is always the possibility in this steamy air mass that some renegade thunderstorms develop in the afternoon ahead of the front. This happened yesterday in Connecticut and those storms were severe as they moved across Central and Eastern Long Island.

Once the front passes overnight, humidity levels will drop for Saturday and for at least part of Sunday. However the air mass coming in from the west is not significantly cooler so we will still be hot with sunshine Saturday and a west wind. Highs will be in the upper 80s and lower 90s but it will definitely feel more comfortable. Sunday we will see sunshine for much of the day with highs again in the upper 80s and lower 90s.

Another cold front will arrive late Sunday and this one has a significantly cooler air mass behind it. We will see the risk for thunderstorms late Sunday into Sunday evening as the front passes. There is severe weather risk being indicated by the Storm Prediction Center and we will update this through the weekend. Next week you can expect cooler than normal temperatures and very low levels of humidity certainly through the first half of the week and it will be dry for the most part. Monday and Tuesday we probably will see highs not getting out of the 70s in most places with a good deal of sunshine both days.
