Powerful Cold Front Severe Thunderstorm & Tornado Risk Followed By Very Cold Air Into Wednesday
No doubt that this is going to be a very busy weather day in the Eastern United States. We have a major storm centered in the Great Lakes and heading into Eastern Canada. The trailing cold front extends southward into Southeastern US. There is a cold polar air mass behind the front driving much of the dynamics which are quite strong. The result will be patches of moderate to heavy downpours today and then a squall line of severe thunderstorms that will move from west to east this evening across New York State and Pennsylvania south into Maryland and Eastern Virginia.
SATELLITE WITH LIGHTNING STRIKES
WEATHER RADAR
The first round of heavy rain has moved into New England and we expect to see patches of showery rains and heavy downpours to develop during the day. There will be short breaks between downpours so the rain should not be continuous. A warm front is surging northward and temperatures will rise into the 60s in many locations across Eastern Pennsylvania to Southern New England and northward in New York State.
While much of the area in New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania are at a slight to enhanced risk for severe thunderstorms, the biggest risk I believe will be from potentially damaging winds as the front passes. Along with the development of strong convection, we have to consider the momentum of a weather front that is advancing at a rate of 40 to 50 mph from west to east. This will likely create a large area of strong wind gusts as the front approaches and passes through tonight. The worst of this will be from 7pm to about midnight from west to east.
