Ophelia Bringing Rain, Strong Winds Coast Coastal Flooding Delaware to Southern New England

Tropical Storm Ophelia is moving its way inland in coastal North Carolina. Heavy rain and strong winds extend from the center northward up the coast to Southern New England. Bands of moderate to occasionally heavy rain will sweep northward up the coast today though we should start to see the rain diminish and taper off from south to north this afternoon.

Coastal areas from Long Island and Southern New England south and west are under a gale warning for winds gusting to 40 mph or more. Storm Warnings for winds of 50 mph or more are up for Coastal New Jersey along with high wind warnings for areas just inland from Mommouth County southward to Cape May County. Coastal flood warnings and coastal flood advsiories up for flooding at high tide today.

Needless to say this is going to be a nasty weekend with rain coupled with a raw northeast wind. Rainfall amounts into tonight will be in the 1 to 2 inch range with higher amounts in parts of coastal and Southern New Jersey. When it is all said and done Monday, rainfall amounts will range from 1.5 to 2 inches inland and 2 to as much as 4 inches in some places along the coast.

Temperatures today will be in the upper 50s and lower 60s for highs which matches up well with the idea that today is the first day of the new Autumn Season. Look for rain to taper off from south to north this afternoon however Ophelia will still be an issue tonight and Sunday. The center is forecast to move northward through Eastern North Carolina and make its way into Eastern Virginia along Chesapeake Bay tonight and Sunday.

The slow moving weakening Ophelia, and the strong high to the north will keep us in an onshore flow into next week. Rain will be on and off tonight and Sunday though there could still be some bands of heavier downpours especially Sunday afternoon and evening. Not everyone will participate in this but it will be cloudy and raw otherwise. Winds will be lower Sunday near the coast but still on the gusty side. Highs will be in the 60s. We could see the rain pull out Sunday night but we will start the week off with lots of clouds Monday with highs just in the 60s.
