NYC Deep Freeze Tonight
The NYC deep freeze is here. We have seen 34 straight days of above normal temperatures but that streak ended today as temperatures have been falling off all afternoon and will continue to fall tonight. NYC temperatures will have that deep freeze feel with temperatures by morning in the low to mid teens and wind chills down near zero. For some areas in the city, this is the first trip below the 32 degree mark! That it took until January 4th to get that low is highly unusual.
Satellite loop shows dry air overhead and much of the cloud cover has moved out to the east of the coast. There were some ocean effect snows going on over Eastern Long Island but there is no snow shower activity anywhere close to the city and the overnight should be free from any snow showers.
Tuesday we will see a good deal of sunshine, much less wind, and temperatures will rebound back to 32 or so. The rebound in temperatures will continue on Wednesday with highs getting back closer to 40 or even break 40 degerees. Wednesday morning wont be as cold though areas away from the city will be cold again with some spots down below 10. City temperatures should bottom Wednesday morning in the 20s.
The moderation in temperatures will continue on Thursday and Friday with highs back in the 40s. Saturday we will see a onshore flow of chilly air and the chance for a cold rain with highs in the upper 30s to lower 40s. Longer range we see an active pattern with more cold air masses coming down next week. There are some signals that we could see more precipitation but the models remain rather uncertain at this point. We will have more on this later. Here is overnight model analysis. At least this NYC deep freeze doesn’t last long!
