Heat Humidity Thunderstorms With Severe Weather Risk

Late Today Into Tonight

This is going to be third and final day of high temperatures near or over 90 degrees for Eastern Pennsylvania to Southern New England and that sets us up for late this afternoon and evening. The Storm Prediction Center is indicating a slight risk or 15 percent chance there could be some severe thunderstorms across Eastern Pennsylvania to Southern New England and that includes much of New Jersey, New York City, and Long Island.

Ahead of all this today is a round of sunshine and daytime heating and that will send temperatures to 90 degrees or higher though the upside is going to be a bit capped with the approaching cold front and cloud cover. Humidity levels will be a little higher today but they will still generally be near or under 60 which by standards of high humidity, this isn’t really anywhere close. However it is been so bone dry the last few days you may notice the difference.

Radars will start loading up this afternoon and the main threat time for storms will be after 3pm with peak storms this evening. The main risk from these thunderstorms will be strong gusty wind potential. The cold front bringing the thunderstorms is going to keep on moving which is a little unusual since they seem to hang around for a day or so before passing lately. That should allow for improving weather conditions to start Sunday.

We still have an upper trough to contend with and that might set off another shower or thunderstorm Sunday especially in the afternoon and the highest chance for this will be inland north and northeast of the coast. Sunday highs will be a little lower but still very warm reaching the mid to upper 80s. Drier air and some sunshine are back for Monday with highs in the upper 70s and lower 80s and then heat returns Tuesday and Wednesday and likely lasts right through the end of next week.
