Excessive Heat 100 Degree Plus Highs

Oppressive Humidity Into Saturday

The hottest part of the heatwave starts today. Yesterday highs were in the mid to upper 90s across much of Eastern Pennsylvania to Southern New England though it was about 10 degrees cooler closer to the coast. Today there will be more of a west wind and that means everyone bakes. Afternoon highs will reach 100 to 105 degrees with heat indices approaching 110. Humidity remains oppressive with dew points around 70. The center is the upper ridge is virtually overhead creating a stable atmosphere so we do not expect to see any thunderstorms popping up this afternoon and evening.

We could see some record high minimum temperatures Friday morning as most lows will be bottoming in the low 80s and some urban areas may not get much below 85! That is oppressive. Friday will be a repeat performance of today but there is the chance for some thunderstorms late in the day. Afternoon highs once again will reach 100 to 105 with heat indices close to 110.

The flattening or deflating of the heat ridge will allow several systems moving over the top of the ridge to drop southeastward and the door for thunderstorms reopens Friday afternoon. In fact these waves of thunderstorms rolling through late in the day Friday and again Saturday raises the risk of severe weather and the Storm Prediction Center is indicating that both Friday and Saturday we are at a slight risk or a 15 percent chance for severe thunderstorms.

Thursday and Friday are peak heat. Temperatures will be a touch lower Saturday as highs reach the upper 90s to near or just over 100 degrees as opposed to 100 to 105. We will see the risk for afternoon and evening thunderstorms, some severe. Sunday will probably be another day of severe thunderstorm risk though temperatures will ease somewhat. Most highs Sunday will be in the low and middle 90s. Monday could bring more numerous showers and thunderstorms as a slow moving cold front makes its move from west to east.
