Rain Thunderstorms & Severe Weather Risk Monday

Drying Out Tuesday & Wednesday

We are wrapping up a lovely Father’s Day weekend with dry air over much of the Middle Atlantic states. Showers and thunderstorms in Upstate New York & Northern New England are due to the cold unstable air aloft and low pressure over Atlantic Canada. That low moves out to the east. Skies will start out clear tonight before clouds start rolling in from the west ahead of an approaching warm front. Monday morning lows will be in the upper 50s inland and low to mid 60s everywhere else.

We have a warm front cold front combination setting up for Monday. Ahead of the warm front Monday morning look for some downpours and the risk for a thunderstorm and then as the cold front approaches in the afternoon, we will see some more showers and thunderstorms along with the possibility of severe weather. The Storm Prediction Center has a 15 percent chance or a slight risk for severe thunderstorms covering Eastern Pennsylvania, almost all of New Jersey and points south into Maryland Delaware and Virginia while a marginal risk for isolated severe thunderstorms extends into the Hudson Valley, Southwest Connecticut and Long Island.

This weather system could produce a general inch to an inch and a half of rain from New York City, Northern New Jersey north and east and less than an inch south and southwest. The convective nature of this weather system does open the door to locally higher amounts which could go up by 50 percent or more.

Monday high temperatures will range from the upper 70s to the north and low to mid 80s South Jersey and Southeastern Pennsylvania southward. Humidity levels Monday will be rising considerable as dew points make a run for the upper 60s to near 70. Showers and some thunderstorms will shift to areas from New York City north and northeast Monday night but they should be gone by Tuesday morning. Weather conditions should slowly improve Tuesday with clouds giving way to some sunshine as the day wears on. Wednesday will see plenty of sunshine. Highs both days will be in the upper 70s and lower 80s.
