100 Degree Plus Highs & Severe Weather Risk
Hot Independence Day Severe Storm Risk
When you start out the day with temperatures at 7am in the mid to upper 80s, you know it is going to be a brutally hot day. Satellite loops show clear skies and we have upper air troughs to the northwest that will be prssing a mostly west wind today. There is nothing to stop temperatures from repeating yesterday’s highs for a second day in a row. Temperatures this afternoon will reach 100 to 105 degrees. Only standing right on the beaches will provide you with any sort of relief. Humidity levels will be very high once again.
The position of the heat ridge in the Eastern US changes slightly today to allow for upper troughs in the northwest flow to resume and one such upper trough will be moving through later this afternoon and evening producing a few thunderstorms and severe weather risk per the Storm Prediction Center. The main risk from these storms will be strong gusty winds and possibly some hail as the atmosphere is extremely unstable. Anytime between 3pm and 10pm is the window of opportunitiy.

Once the storms play through it will remain very warm and humid with Saturday morning lows in the 70s inland and low 80s warmer urban locations. Saturday, Independence Day, will be the last day of excessive heat. Highs once again will approach or perhaps break 100 degrees with sunshine into the afternoon along with high humidity. Sea breezes again will be limited to the area beaches.
Another upper trough in the northwest flow aloft will set off thunderstorms in the late afternoon and evening and we do have Severe Weather Risk again. The Storm Prediction Center is indicating a large area of slight risk or a 15 percent chance of severe thunderstorms from Virginia to New York City and Western Long Island with a marginal risk for isolated severe thunderstorms on either side of the slight risk zone.
Storms again will play through in that 3pm to 10pm window, then we may cool down slightly with Sunday morning lows in the upper 60s to mid 70s. A weather front approaches Sunday and it is going to mean for lower high temperatures in the upper 80s and lower 90s in most places, and the risk for downpours, thunderstorms and severe weather for the third straight day.
Monday brings even lower temperatures in the upper 70s and lower 80s but that is because the frontal boundary stalls and there will be a wave developing on it so we could see more numerous showers and some thunderstorms before the front pushes further south and east Tuesday. The heatwave however will be done and we should remain closer to average temperature wise next week.
