Severe Weather Risk Late Today Into Tonight

Cool Dry Start To Work Week

A one day break from cold fronts and severe weather risks has passed. We now look ahead to the next cold front that is advancing eastward from the Great Lakes and Ohio Valley. This weather front is going to set off thunderstorms late this afternoon and evening over a wide area in the Eastern US from New England to Georgia. The Storm Prediction Center is indicating a slight risk or 15 percent chance for severe thunderstorms late this afternoon and tonight as the cold front crosses Eastern Pennsylvania to Southern New England. There is also a chance for an isolated tornado or two to spin up in areas from Pennsylvania and New Jersey southward.

Ahead of this we have sunshine and very warm conditions into this afternoon. Humidity levels will rise into the 60s today making it more humid than yesterday but shy of what we consider to be oppressive levels. Some renegade thunderstorms could pop up ahead of the main line later  this afternoon and then the bulk of the thunderstorm activity moves through this evening. Highs today will reach the upper 80s to around 90 degrees or so in some places. Temperatures will be a little lower near the coast with an ocean wind.

Behind the cold front we have a strengthening northwest flow from Canada that will take control of the weather pattern tonight and for the week ahead. Skies will clear late tonight. Most lows will be in the 60s. Monday will be a cooler and much less humid day as dew points head for the pleasant 40s. Skies Monday will be mostly sunny and high temperatures will be mostly in the 70s.

Tuesday will be a repeat performance of Monday with Tuesday morning lows in the 50s to around 60 degrees and sunshine taking highs to the mid to upper 70s in most areas. Wednesday we will start to see temperatures creep up a bit along with the humidity with sunshine. Highs will be in the upper 70s and lower 80s. Thursday is going to be a very important day this week. Not only will we see temperatures reach well into the 80s to around 90 degrees, humidity levels will be soaring ahead of what appears to be a powerful low pressure area moving through the Great Lakes and a trailing cold front. The Storm Prediction Center is already indicating severe weather risk for Thursday. When SPC has severe weather in their longer range outlook, it is definitely a call to pay attention.
