Showers Today Give Way to Quick Shot of Cold Followed By A Big Warmup

We are still in that time of year where things tend to swing back and forth but it is all in the context of a steady uptrend in temperatures overall. These things do not come by in smooth fashion. Rather it is with fits and starts. Today we have a cold front moving through with the risk for showers and even a rumble or two of thunder can’t be ruled out into this afternoon.

Once the front passes we have a quick shot of colder air coming in for tonight. Freeze watches are posted for some areas inland north and west of the coast and warmer urban centers. Highs today will be mostly in the 60s as winds turn northwest. Then we head down to 20s in areas inland and under freeze watches and mostly 30s every else by Thursday morning.

Satellite and radars are not overly impressive with this cold front. On the far right we have a coastal storm offshore but it is moving north northeast and it will allow the front to pass through and move along. The showers on the radars look to be patchy in nature and they are not producing much in the way of rain. Rainfall amounts today will be generally a tenth of an inch or less.

This shot of cold air from Eastern Canada comes in quick and it will go out quick. Thursday looks to be a day of sunshine with a bit of a gusty northwest wind. Temperatures will probably have a tough time in the 50s though some warm spots in South Jersey and Southern Pennsylvania could reach 60 degrees or so.

Once this chilly air mass moves out we will start the process of warming things up. High pressure moves offshore and winds turn south. To the west in the Great Plains late today and tonight, and in the Mississippi & Missouri River Valleys Friday we will likely see very active severe weather events. The Storm Prediction Center has risk continuing in these areas over the weekend as 2 storm systems come out of the Plains and head to the Great Lakes.

An upper ridge building along the East Coast will allow things to warm up though Friday we will still be under the influence of the cooler air mass from Thursday. We will see sunshine and that should be enough to take highs back into the 60s. Over the weekend Saturday will be a transition day with with sun and arriving clouds. Highs will be in the 60s. A warm front will pass Saturday  night into Sunday morning with perhaps a shower or two. Then it is back to developing sunshine Sunday with highs in the 70s. As long as there are no surprises we will be heading for the 80s in many locations Monday with sunshine and a southwest wind. Of course it will be cooler along south and east facing shorelines. The next cold front isn’t due until late Tuesday of next week at the earliest.
