Sunshine Continues With Low Humidity Heat Returns Thursday With Severe Storm Risk

Satellite loops show mostly clear skies for the most part from Maine to Virginia and we have another beautiful mid June day of sunshine, very low humidity, and highs reaching the mid to upper 70s this afternoon. That is a few degrees below average for this time of year. Radars are nice and quiet. The center of the last round of dry air is overhead today and we have not weather issues to worry about. Skies tonight will be mostly clear and temperatures will bottom mostly in the 50s inland and low to mid 60s coast and warmer urban locations.

Wednesday we will begin to shift away from the dry air and  start to turn more humid though the process is going to be slow. Dew points will be rising into the upper 50s and lower 60s as the day wears on and while this is technically more humid than Tuesday, it is not unbearable by any means. We will see some sunshine and a south wind with Wednesday highs in the upper 70s and lower 80s. There could be some showers in the afternoon as the humid air arrives.

Thursday is going to be the one hot and humid day for this week and this is due to a strong cold front that will be moving eastward. We have an usually strong storm system that is moving across the Great Lakes and into Southeastern Canada. The front will be setting off a widespread severe weather event across the Midwest Wednesday and severe weather risk shifts to the Eastern US Thursday as the front approaches.

The Storm Prediction Center continues to indicate a “slight” risk or 15 percent chance for severe thunderstorms Thursday and there will likely be some tornado risk with this though the main risk is likely to be from damaging winds. Dew points will soar toward 70 and temperatures Thursday will reach the upper 80s and lower 90s. Thunderstorm risk will come in the afternoon as the front passes.

Friday we will see a return of drier air and lower humidity. A tropical like system will be passing to the south so we may see some clouds mixing with sun Friday with highs in the upper 70s and lower 80s. Father’s Day weekend is looking nice with very low humidity again for Saturday and Sunday and sunshine for both weekend days. Highs over the weekend will be in the upper 70s and lower 80s.
