Severe Thunderstorm & Flash Flood Risk Especially from New Jersey &

Eastern Pennsylvania Southward

A stalled weather front lies along the coastal plain and a upper trough will energize a low on the front. This is going to produce showers and some thunderstorms later today and this evening and there is severe weather risk per the Storm Prediction Center. A slight risk for severe weather covers much of Eastern Virginia & Eastern Maryland. Delaware, Southeastern Pennsylvania and southern New Jersey. A marginal risk extends further north and northwest including Philadelphia and lies just south of New York City.

Flood watches are posted for Southeastern Pennsylvania,  New Jersey as well as northern Delaware. The risk for localized flash flooding extends northward to cover New York City and Western Long Island. It  covers all of New Jersey and southern portions of the lower Hudson Valley. The heaviest rain is forecast to fall over Central and South Jersey. Should a thunderstorm park itself over one particular area, amounts could be double the forecast.

WEATHER RADAR

We expect downpours and thunderstorms to develop late this morning and continue into this evening in a north south arc from New York City south to the Delmarva Peninsula. In the mix could be some severe thunderstorms. Temperatures today will top in the upper 70s and lower 80s but fall back into the 70s once rain gets underway.

The impulse on the front will eventually move the frontal boundary as well the storms offshore Thursday evening and then weather conditions will improve after that. Friday morning lows will be in the 60s to around 70 degrees. Friday is looking like a dry finish to the week with some early sunshine but clouds will likely be coming into the mix as the day wears on. High temperatures will be in the upper 70s and lower 80s. Humidity levels will be lower earlier in the day but dew points will rise as the day wears on.

Upper air winds will turn to the south bringing moisture back northward up the East Coast Friday night and Saturday. We expect to see showery rains and some thunderstorms to develop as the day wears on and we will likely see on and off showers and thunderstorms right into Sunday before weather conditions improve Monday. Temperatures Saturday will be in the upper 70s to some lower 80s for highs. Sunday could turn a little warmer with highs in the low to mid 80s. General improvement should settle in for Monday and Tuesday of next week with lower humidity and some sunshine returning. Monday and Tuesday high temperatures will be in the upper 70s and lower 80s.
