Non Winter Winter Returns As Temperatures Bounce Sharply Higher
Winter returned for 36 hours and now it is gone. The temperature changes from yesterday’s low to midday Sunday are impressive if not explosive. Boston has seen the biggest rise from -10 to 48 for a 58 degree temperature swing. Most are seeing 30 to 40 temperature swings from the Saturday lows to the temperatures at midday. Temperature guidance in cases like this is not cold enough when it gets cold and not warm enough when it warms. Highs will peak in the mid 40s to lower 50s. Skies are partly sunny at least in most places and you can see the fast movement of high clouds signfying the warm southwest flow that has replaced the bitter cold flow from Eastern Canada.

All of this is happening with little or no precipitation with the exception of some light snows in Northern New England. Tonight will be a warm night (for this time of year) with most lows in the low to mid 30s and some 20s in colder inland locations. The week ahead is going to be a non-winter winter week with above normal temperatures all week long.
Monday sees low pressure off the Southeast US coast moving east northeast to northeast. An area of rain will stay offshore but some clouds will probably build back westward from off the ocean and should should limit sunshine though inland there may be more sun than clouds. Highs Monday will be in the upper 40s to lower 50s but no rain is in the forecast.
Two storm systems are in play for this week but there is no cold air to speak of in the Northeast and Mid Atlantic states so it is pretty much the same story that we have been dealing with since after Christmas. Tuesday should be a dry day with some sunshine and temperatures will be in the mid 40s to some lower 50s thanks to a weak high building to the northeast.
A weak frontal boundary passes through Tuesday night with nothing more than clouds and maybe a passing brief shower. Wednesday should be a dry day with highs in many areas in the low to middle 50s with some sunshine and arriving clouds. The next system heads for the Great Lakes and that likely brings some rain or showers late Wednesday night through at least part of Thursday with temperatures in the 50s and some warm spots in South Jersey could reach 60!
We get a short break Friday as the Thursday front stalls and energy swings around the Great Lakes. This will cause another low to develop late Friday into early Saturday with more rain before the low pulls away. It turns a little colder behind that system but there is no real cold air to speak of and certainly no repeat performance of what we just experienced. The snow drought continues except for well north in Upstate NY and Northern New England and there are no signs of any pattern change coming anytime soon.
