Major Coastal Storm Could Bring Period of Snow & Wind

Coastal New Jersey Long Island

It’s another morning of low teens and single digit lows across Eastern Pennsylvania. Some places in Northwest New Jersey and in the Hudson Valley and interior Connecticut are below zero. Everything is frozen like the Arctic and today, we see sunshine and some clouds. It will be another day where highs do not get above the upper teens to lower 20s across Eastern Pennsylvania to Southern New England. Radars are quiet and we will throw in the chance there could be the odd snow shower isolated in a few places.

Tonight it will be basically the same old thing. Clear skies and very cold temperatures and by morning, once again we will be in the lower teens in warmer urban locations, single digits inland and below zero in the coldest spots. Friday we see sunshine and a few clouds and highs again will be in the upper teens and lower 20s.

On to the weekend and we are going to see a major storm developing out of a low that forms off the Southeast US coast and heads east northeast. This is going to become a monster ocean storm however it is going to behave quite differently from what happened last weekend. The storm will explode offshore but the track is NOT FAVORABLE for a major winter storm area wide.

The western flank of the storm could come close enough to bring some snow for coastal New Jersey, mainly east of the Garden State Parkway, as well as Long Island (especially Suffolk County) and Southern & Eastern Connecticut. Due to the proximity to the coast and the very tight nature of the storm, you will go from as little as a coating to may 4 inches or more over a relatively short distance. We will wait until later today to issue an early call on this system. We should point out that the presence of a powerful storm offshore this weekend, coupled with a full moon, could bring coastal flooding issues at high tide Sunday.

In the meantime Saturday we will have sunshine giving way to some late day clouds. Highs will again not get much above the upper teens and lower 20s. Sunday will be a mostly cloudy day. There is the chance for a period of snow from Coastal New Jersey to Long Island and Eastern & Southern Connecticut. Most highs Sunday will be in the low to mid 20s. Next week starts dry and there is a chance we could see temperatures reach close to the freezing mark for highs Monday and Tuesday.
