Heatwave Begins Tuesday With 100 Degree Highs Widespread Thursday & Friday

We are at the beginnings of what could be the hottest week of the summer season later this week as July starts Wednesday. We will be prepping ahead of that beginning today as a weather front pushes southward and clouds gradually give way to partly sunny skies. We are going to leave in the slight chance for an isolated shower or thunderstorm this afternoon and evening. If they happen it will be probably inland. Most highs today will reach the lower 80s with temperatures along the shore a few degrees cooler.

A large ridge of high pressure aloft is building across the Midwest to the Gulf States. We usually refer to this as a heat ridge in the summer months. The Northeast and Mid Atlantic states will be on the northwest side of that heat ridge where we often see the hottest temperatures. In this case we are talking probably a widespread area of geography that will be seeing actual temperatures reaching 100 to 105 degrees.

The other thing about the heat ridge is that air is sinking on the east side around the high which means it is not only heating but it is also lacking any kind of moisture and the upper atmosphere is somewhat stable. Thunderstorm activity will be extremely limited and isolated and most areas may not see a drop of rain for the entire week and possibly through the July 4th weekend.

We do have a couple of days of mostly reasonable temperatures though humidity levels will be on the high side. Monday we are looking at high temperatures reaching the low and middle 80s with no worse than partly sunny skies. Tuesday we will take temperatures up a notch with highs reaching the upper 80s to around 90 degrees. Temperatures will be cooler along south and east facing shorelines with winds off the water,

Wednesday begins what I would describe as very hot as winds turn west and northwest creating a down-sloping condition in the Northeast and Northern Mid Atlantic states. That means higher temperatures with sunshine. Highs Wednesday will reach the mid to upper 90s in most places and we could see some odd spot reaching 100. Thursday and Friday we will see the vast majority of Eastern Pennsylvania to Southern New England reaching highs of 100 to 105 degrees. These are actual temperatures or heat indices.

Friday will likely be a repeat performance of Thursday. Regarding the 4th of July weekend (Saturday and Sunday) temperatures should come off their peaks as the heat ridge weakens but highs will still reach the mid to upper 90s Saturday and low to middle 90s Sunday. Both days will feature some sunshine. Right now we see only minimal chances for isolated showers or thunderstorms through this week and probably through next weekend.
