Glorification of the Groundhog Nickel & Dime Snow Events

& Bitter Cold Weekend

Today is the day when every year, people gather from miles around to see what a rodent has to say about the rest of the winter. To me Groundhog day has always been one of those that seems a little silly, and that’s because it is very silly. However whether he see’s or doesn’t see his shadow, winter still has another 6 weeks to go. With that said, we are seeing some moderation in temperatures today and Tuesday which means that we will reach the upper 20s and lower 30s this afternoon and, yes we might break the freezing mark. Skies today should be no worse than partly sunny. Reaching low 30s may feel good, but in reality is still well below the seasonal averages of upper 30s for this time of year.

Deep snow cover, clear skies, and not much wind set us up for another night of temperatures in the single digits inland and low to mid teens warmer urban locations. Tuesday we will see no worse than partly sunny skies and we will once again challenge getting to the freezing mark. Most highs will be in the lower 30s.

This is a week of I would refer to as nickel and dime events. Neither one look to amount to very much. The first is weak low pressure that will be heading east across the Lower Ohio Valley and pass to our south. The second will come Friday in the form of a strong arctic cold front that will pass through bringing in another brutally cold air mass for this coming weekend.

We won’t get much to speak of from either event. The first passes mostly to the south with a weak area of snow. Maybe someone from South Jersey southward gets the ground whitened up a bit. The second Friday could come with snow showers or a line of snow squalls ahead of what promises to be another shot of brutally cold Arctic air for the weekend.

This leaves us with clouds around for at least part of Wednesday after the first low moves out to the east. Highs Wednesday will be in the upper 20s and lower 30s. The same holds for Thursday and then Friday it is clouds and some snow showers. This cold air mass will mean lows by Saturday morning will be in the single digits, coupled with strong northwest winds and wind chills below zero. The bitter cold air holds on into Sunday. There are some model signs overnight for a genuine break coming for a few days next week but we will wait for confirmation of this in the coming days.
