Wintry Weather Pattern Next 2 Weeks
Over the next 2 weeks the weather pattern across North America is turning very cold. The long term indices are pointing to a colder pattern thanks to a suddenly strongly negative East Pacific Oscillation that is forecast to be negative at least through mid month. The weather models themselves have been so highly volatile lately. However it seems that over the last 4 or 5 days the colder look is there on all three major models.
I put the Jet stream map above and the 5000 ft temperature anomaly underneath so you can see what the result will be at ground level. Notice how the flow from Canada has turned temperatures well below normal everywhere east of the Rockies and through most of Canada. The second cold blast will come for the middle of next week as the polar vortex strengthens and drops southward.
Notice the large area of much below normal temperatures invades the Midwest and East. There is a large area of temperatures running 10 to 20 degrees below average. All of this makes sense and is in line with the GFS weather model and with the Canadian (for the most part).
Longer term after that vortex pulls out another trough begins to set up with the cold flow continuing. The question of storms however becomes more difficult. The models are pointing to the next weather system approaching Sunday night and Monday and models at the moment are everywhere with this. The European would imply another possible threat once the big vortex pulls out late in the period however we all know how models do well in the long range. We will address the short range rain snow threat late this evening. Meanwhile, ANGRY BEN has his views on the long range for New York City and even has some ideas about Christmas!
