SNOW ICE RAIN MONDAY
After this brutal record breaking cold it is remarkable that we are now going to see temperatures jump into the 50s on Tuesday. That is the way things are headed. The arctic air mass is headed out and we are going to see precipitation arrive on Monday as a brief period of snow that goes to freezing rain and then to rain. Before that is another cold night ahead however with clear skies and diminishing winds (finally).
Forecast lows tonight will be in the low teens and single digits however in Connecticut lows will be below zero again. There will also be pockets of below zero temperatures elsewhere where local conditions favor colder temperatures like parts of Eastern Long Island, Northwest New Jersey and the Hudson Valley. Temperatures will start rising on Monday and they will continue to rise into Tuesday when highs will reach the 50s in many locations.
Now with regards to snowfall most accumulations along the coast will be around an inch or so with slightly higher amounts forecast inland. The inland areas will transition to sleet and freezing rain and then to rain during Monday night.
WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY SNOWFALL FORECAST
Some ice will be a problem inland. The greatest threat for significant ice will be well inland in Northern New Jersey and in Eastern Pennsylvania extending northeastward into Southeastern New York. Some areas are forecast to see more the 1/4 of an inch of ice accumulation
WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY ICE FORECAST
Ultimately all areas here will go over to rain overnight Monday night and continue as rain on Tuesday. Satellite loop shows clouds already racing eastward across the Western areas of the Ohio Valley. Clouds will probably be here at some point later tonight or certainly by daybreak Monday. Radar is beginning to show some snow moving into the southwestern areas of the radar range shown below.
With regards to the longer range once this weather system goes by it will get cold for a couple of days at the end of the week followed by milder weather arriving next weekend. The weather pattern relaxes a bit as we move along through the week of February 21st though the ridge in the west reflexes again. We can certainly expect above normal temperatures beginning next weekend and lasting for at least a few days.
