Winter Weather Advisory NYC Long Island New Jersey South of Route 78

Winter Weather Advisories are up this morning and they now include New York City and Long Island. We can add those areas to New Jersey south of Route 78, Southeast Pennsylvania, Maryland and Delaware. The story for later today and tonight will be sleet and freezing rain rather than snow.

This is not a strong system by any means but it will be enough to slicken up roadways especially if we see freezing rain develop out of this. Temperatures will be in the 20s all day today and all night into Sunday morning so no doubt this will glaze up surfaces. Up to a tenth of an inch of ice accretion is possible in the advisory zone.

Clouds are already here and we will see sleet develop on the regional radar later today. It is already showing up in parts of Southern Virginia east to the Delmarva Peninsula. Echoes should start developing and spreading northward through Southeastern Pennsylvania and New Jersey this afternoon.

Weak low pressure is riding up the coast and then will slide to the east. Warmer air has moved in aloft to create a warm zone of temperatures above 32 at about 5000 feet. This will favor sleet over snow and possible freezing rain or freezing drizzle. The area of sleet and potential freezing rain will hug the advisory zone later today and the shift to east of NYC overnight into Sunday morning.

Once the main area gets by we will probably see lingering sleet or freezing rain scattered around during Sunday and also into Monday. The attention turns to the next two storm systems for this week and there is good news regarding both those storms. The block has broken down and this will allow both the Tuesday and Thursday system to bring warm air into areas up to Southern New England and the Hudson Valley. That means other than a little sleet or freezing rain at the start, these next two systems will be rain producers.

Whenever you see snow starting in Vermont and New Hampshire before it starts along the coast, you know yo are dealing with a system that is bringing warm air up the coast. Temperatures will start to edge above freezing on Monday. Freezing rain could still be an issue north and west of the coast for awhile later Monday or Monday night. Rain should come to an end from west to east Tuesday. Colder and drier air follows for Wednesday into Thursday. Then the next low takes a track to our west with the high moving offshore so that will be rain with a chance for a quick thump of snow at the start. Then we watch temperatures climb into the 50s Friday with showers and who knows maybe even a thunderstorm!. Then it is cold and dry next weekend.
