Winter Weather Advisory Northwest NJ Hudson Valley Connecticut Route 84 North

Advisories continue for much of Pennsylvania except for Southeast Pennsylvania

We are watching the first of two bands of precipitation we are dealing with tonight as warm air moves northward into today’s cold air mass. There is a narrow band of snow and sleet moving through New Jersey and Eastern Pennsylvania. This area moved through South Central Pennsylvania with some sleet and wet snow this afternoon. The area is forecast to continue to move eastward this evening and gradually weaken. It will reach Connecticut and Long Island after 7pm. Then our attention will shift back to the west again as a second area of precipitation begins to move across Pennsylvania tonight and reaching the coast early Tuesday morning.

Regional and local radars show this first band of snow and sleet making its way northeastward into New Jersey, NYC & the lower Hudson Valley. On the Fort Dix radar below we see the first band of precipitation has moved out of Southeast Pennsylvania and is in Southern New Jersey. We are also seeing the beginnings of the second area of precipitation developing to the west. That is destined to head eastward later on tonight.

The issue overnight is not snow or ice accumulation since we are talking about light precipitation overall. It is about icy areas developing on roadways and sidewalks due to the cold temperatures and cold surfaces. At most a coating to an inch is forecast in the area in pink on the map. This area is where you can expect slippery roads overnight so be cautious while travelling.

Warm air gradually come in so the overnight snow and sleet either ends as rain or just ends. Then we wait for a cold front and some more showers later Tuesday afternoon and evening with temperatures in the 40s. Then we usher in the arrival of cold air on gusty northwest winds beginning Wednesday and lasting right into early next week.

This cold air will be one of many keys regarding a threat for snow over the weekend as low pressure comes out of the Southwest US and heads towards the Middle Atlantic coast.
