Winter Weather Advisory Into This Afternoon Fast Moving Cold Front

A fast moving cold front is moving quickly to the east and with it an area of snow. This is moving so quickly that precipitation will be in and out in a 4 to 6 hour time frame. Also while it is cold, warmer air will push northward and temperatures will eventually rise above freezing where the precipitation falls as mostly snow and into the upper 30s and lower 40s along the immediate coast, where the precipitation falls mainly as rain.

Winter Weather Advisories are posted for much of Pennsylvania except for the southeast part of the state. Advisories are up also for parts of Northern New Jersey, the lower Hudson Valley into Northwestern Connecticut.

Snow forecasts have been nudged a little higher by the National Weather Service across parts of Pennsylvania while my forecast from yesterday remains the same and there are no major changes. The NWS forecast seems to be more in line with mine today.

We stayed clear for most of the night which allowed temperatures to drop into the 20s. Clouds are rapidly increasing now as the satellite picture shows, and the precipitation is not that far behind.

This looks like a late spring cold front except that we are seeing bands of moderate snow ahead of the front in the dark blue. That snow is moving quickly to the east. In the warmer air on the regional radar you see rain. It is a narrow band of precipitation as indicated earlier so there really isn’t much time or much upside potential here.

All of this moves through mid morning through mid afternoon from west to east. Follow the NAM model loop and you can see where the snow changes to rain along the coast. Southwest winds under certain conditions is not a warming wind and this is one of those set ups. There just wasn’t enough time for warmer air to move into the Eastern US especially with the snow cover that extends rather far to the south.

Once precipitation ends this from west to east weather conditions improve tonight as skies partially clear. Tuesday we see an upper air disturbance dropping southeast from the Great Lakes and this could trigger off a few scattered snow or rain showers, mainly to areas from Northern New Jersey and Northeastern Pennsylvania north and east.

Wednesday brings another cold front but this one is weak. We will warm up ahead of it with some sunshine and just the chance of a late day brief shower. Highs will be in the 50s. Then it turns colder for Thursday and Friday with some sunshine both days and highs in the 30s. Two weather systems make their approach over the weekend and it looks like we will get some rain at some point on either or both days. More on this later today.
