Winter Weather Advisory Hudson Valley NW
This is going to turn out to be quite the storm for New England as we have much of Massachusetts Vermont New Hampshire and Maine under Winter Storm Warnings for a foot plus of snow. For our area Winter Weather Advisories are up for Dutchess Ulster and Sullivan Counties northward for snow beginning Thursday morning. Also we have Winter Storm Watches continuing for the northern half of Connecticut.
Right now there are no weather issues other than the chill in the air and the 20 degree temperature change from yesterday. Some clouds are moving through as an upper air disturbance moves across the Eastern Great Lakes and New England. We should see some sun through all this however and highs just into the 40s. Then we cloud over tonight and snow develops Thursday morning.
Now with regards to Thursday i expect a quick shot of snow for an hour or two at most near the coast and then a change to rain as the storm develops. Inland the snow goes on longer before it changes and that is where we expect to see some accumulation. However the change to rain will push up north toward Route 84. That keeps this more on the nuisance level than anything else. Temperatures will reach the 40s along the coast and 30s to near 40 inland in some places until the storm moves to the east Thursday night.
Cold dry air follows on Friday with gusty northwest winds and some sunshine. Saturday we have a weak warm front approaching that could produce some snow or rain showers at night. Sunday New Years Day looks good. However looking ahead to Monday with a high moving into New England and overrunning precipitation developing to the south we could be setting up for some icing potential especially inland. We will have more on this after we get through the Thursday event.
