Winter Weather Advisory Freezing Rain Sunday Just North of I-95

Bitter Cold Start New Week

For the third time in 6 days we have some sort of warning or advisory up and for Sunday we have Winter Weather Advisories up for areas along and north and west of I-95 and they extend from Maryland northeast to Pennsylvania, Northern New Jersey north and west of the turnpike, and the continuing northeast into the Hudson Valley and the northwestern half of Connecticut. The advisories lies just to the northwest of NYC and the immediate coast.

Very warm air is heading eastward ahead of an arctic front but all that warm air is going aloft. Snow covered ground is going to keep cold air trapped through at least Sunday morning just inland as rain arrives and that will make it freezing rain. As we saw the other day even just a small ice accretion can create very hazardous conditions and cause numerous car accidents so it is wise to perhaps postpone travel under these conditions.

We woke this morning to very cold temperatures in the teens to near 20 and temperatures today in spite of sunshine are only headed back to near 30 degrees or so for highs. Tonight is going to be tricky. Skies may be clear tonight for at least awhile and this could allow low level ground temperatures to head into the 20s even though warmer air will start to arrive aloft.

If it stays clear into the early morning hours lows could very well be down in the teens away from the warmer urban centers. Once clouds increase enough ground temperatures will level and but this sets up the arrival of freezing rain Sunday morning. The lower the temperatures go tonight, the tougher the climb it will have on Sunday.

I think the rain comes in a little faster Sunday morning spreading icing across Pennsylvania and New Jersey along and northwest of I-95. We like the HRRR’s idea here and we are using this as a guide. For the immediate coast the southwest wind picks up a little warmer air from off the ocean so that should keep it as rain when the precipitation arrives east of NYC. Temperatures there should reach the low 40s. Inland will be tougher as highs struggle through the 30s. Not much in the way of rain will fall but as we know, it doesn’t take much to create a skating rink.

Next on the agenda is the arctic front. Once that goes offshore the coldest air of the season will arrive and that will send temperatures falling. The warmest part of the day Monday will be early on as temperatures start in the mid to upper 30s and those are leftover from the overnight and then they will ease during the day. Some sun returns but there will be a cold northwest wind and we will be headed down to the low teens and even digits inland for Tuesday morning.

Tuesday certainly looks like it will be the coldest day of the young winter season so far. We will have what I like to call completely ineffective sunshine for Tuesday and the forecast high temperatures reveal why the sunshine will be completely ineffective. The core of the cold air will be moving overhead and highs will probably not get out of the teens!

Tuesday night into Wednesday morning will be the coldest night. Lows will be in the single digits just about everywhere. The remaining snow cover likely helps the cause with regards to the low temperatures for Wednesday morning. Temperatures Wednesday afternoon should recover back to the lower 30s as the cold air pulls out.

We will have a brief respite from the cold late next week but then we will need to pay attention to developments for next week. There are model suggestions of another storm system possibly developing for the Northeast and Mid Atlantic states as the tele-connections are suggestion but right now we are in that vague period in the long range where models are having a tough time figuring things out. However there are some signals there and we will be paying attention in the coming days.
