Snow Ice Forecast Maps For Tonight Friday Morning

Winter Weather Advisories are up for much of the area from Eastern Pennsylvania to Southern New England. Winter Storm Warnings are up inland mostly north of Route 84. In the advisory area it will be a blend of snow and sleet and on the southern end of the advisory zone the issue will be sleet and freezing rain with coastal areas going to rain. For those in the advisory zone this is more of nuisance than anything else. The main concern will be ice accretion of a tenth to a quarter of an inch inland and some places will be over a quarter of an inch.

As far as snow and sleet accumulation is concerned, amounts will be on the low end in the southern flank of the advisory zone ranging from a coating to maybe an inch or at most 2 and then snow/sleet accumulations will rise as you head northward. In the southern half of Connecticut and the Hudson Valley south of route 84 there could be a long duration sleet storm out of this so bear that in mind.

My final call snow or snow/sleet or just sleet forecast map below is a little lower than the NWS forecast but it is close. The tough part is the sleet. Snow ratios are usually 10 inches of snow for every inch of rain. With sleet the ratio is more like 2 or 3 inches for every inch. Sleet will keep numbers down in Connecticut south of Route 84 as well as the Hudson Valley and in Northwest New Jersey. Further south it will be mostly sleet and the numbers go down with a coating to an inch or so possible.

Weather conditions will deteriorate tonight as moisture comes in from the west and southwest. Low pressure is moving northeast up the west side of the Appalachians and then it will reach Southwest Pennsylvania. The low then redevelops south of Long Island and heads eastward. A mix of sleet and freezing rain develops in Pennsylvania and interior Maryland later this evening and then quickly spreads northeast reaching NYC around midnight and Southern and Southeastern New England during the early morning hours. You can see the beginnings of the precipitation on the most recent regional radar view below.

By Friday morning we will see widespread sleet and freezing rain in the advisory zone and snow further north. Precipitation will change to rain along the immediate coast but just barely inland of the coast the rain/ice line will come to a grinding halt. Long Island is in the rain zone but very close to the edge of rain/sleet line as that line runs across Long Island Sound and then heads west to just north of NYC. The HRRR model below is from 8pm tonight until 11am Friday showing 2 hour movements of the forecast radar.

Precipitation will end from west to east during the mid to late morning and should be mostly done by afternoon. Weather conditions will improve afterwards as dry air returns. Temperatures through all of this will be in the upper 20s to near 30 inland and low to mid 30s along the coast. Skies will clear Friday night as it turns colder with lows in the 20s. Saturday will be cold and sunny with highs in the low to mid 30s. Sunday look for sun and arriving clouds as another cold front approaches long with an upper trough. Some snow showers could move through in the evening and there is the chance for a brief heavy snow squall when the upper trough goes by. Next week begins cold but dry.
