Winter Storm Watches are now posted from Central New Jersey (North and west of the Turnpike) to NYC, Long Island, upstate NY in the Hudson Valley, Northeastern Pennsylvania to the Catskills, to Connecticut and into Northern New England for Wednesday into Wednesday night. Everything seems on course for a second noreaster in 5 days though this would should not be as fierce. Snow will be the bigger player this time around because of the colder atmosphere. More on this a bit later.

This morning the rotation of clouds around the old coastal storm continues and we are still seeing the coastline being grazed by some snow showers as shown by the radar. This should not last much longer and we will see some developing sunshine before too long. We can also see the clouds from the large storm in the Northern Plains which is our storm for Wednesday. In between we should be fine through Tuesday. Temperatures this morning are in the 30s and we should reach into the 40s. Today. Winds are still kicking around from the northwest today and they should remain gusty at times.

You can see the batch of snow showers swinging around from the east this morning but these should be done in short order. There is nothing else on the radar and we should stay quiet precipitation wise until early Wednesday morning.

Tuesday we will see sunshine giving way to arriving clouds with highs into the 40s. Then as low pressure heads southeast from the Northern Plains, the primary low will weaken and a secondary low will develop just off the Carolina coast and move northward. Weather models overnight have the surface low pinched in more toward the coast than offshore. However the presence of the old storm to the east and the very deep pool of cold air aloft to me suggest track should be a bit further to the east.

This is the upper air profile of temperatures at 5000 ft (850 mb) for Wednesday morning with the secondary low developing and the freezing line well south over the Delmarva Peninsula. The map is from late yesterday’s run. Today’s NAM run is a bit warmer but I’m gonig to disagree with that idea. The European (for a change) has the low further east and colder. I think this makes a bit more sense given the strength of the block to the north and the low to the east. We are going to absorb it all with weather models later today. In the meantime as far as Wednesday goes, snow will develop from south to north Wednesday morning and continue into Wednesday night. Winds will increase from the northeast as the storm strengthens and gales along the coast are likely though I don’t expect it to be as windy inland as it was with the last system.  The system exits Wednesday night. Weather conditions improve on Thursday. The pattern remains active and blocky so we could see one or two more systems like this in the next week to 10 days.
