Windy Very Cold Tonight Thursday Freeze Warnings Inland Rain Over The Weekend

Severe weather played as advertised and upgrading to a slight risk for severe weather was justified given the line of thunderstorms that developed and the numerous warnings that were issued. Now it is on to very cold air that is moving in and it is doing so quickly. Temperature drops of 20 degrees in 2 hours were commonplace as the front passed.

Freeze warnings are up inland in Northwest New Jersey and parts of the Hudson Valley. Freeze warnings are also up for South Central and Eastern Pennsylvania away from the warmer urban locations. Temperatures by morning will be just above freezing in the big cities and long the coast but inland lows will be in the 20s in many areas.

Adding to the cold will be a strong northwest wind which while under criteria for a wind advisory, we will still see gust over 30 mph at times which knocks of 10 degrees or more when it comes to wind chill factors. There is plenty of cold air aloft making for an unstable atmosphere Thursday. This should create clouds mixed with some sun with more clouds inland. It will be windy and cold all day with highs just in the upper 40s and lower 50s.

Thursday night will be cold and windy but the core of the cold air will be moving out so temperatures will be a little higher but still mostly in the 30s to near 40 for overnight lows into Friday morning. Friday we will see a mix of sun and clouds again but we should see temperatures bounce a little higher to the upper 50s and some lower 60s.

GFS MODEL SATURDAY 8PM

Saturday will be the better of the two weekend days for most folks. Low pressure will be coming out of the Southern Plains and there will be another severe weather outbreak from the Southern Plains, the Gulf States and into the Southeast US beginning on Friday and lasting through Saturday. Here we will have sunshine to start Saturday followed by increasing clouds with highs reaching the 60s. Rain will reach Southern Pennsylvania and Southern New Jersey by Saturday evening and overspread the entire area Saturday night.

GFS SUNDAY 8AM

Sunday morning sees the low center off the coast of Southern New Jersey. Rain ends from this point southward but continues to the northeast across Northern New Jersey NYC and Southern New England into early afternoon before ending. Some improvement follows once the rains end from west to east. While it rains, temperatures will probably settle in the upper 40s to mid 50s and then come off those lows as the storm pulls away.

GFS SUNDAY 8PM

Next week we see a blocking pattern developing with low pressure to the east however it might put us in a bit of a sweet spot between it and low pressure in the Plains that won’t be able to move east and instead will move northward. If we can keep the wind from being too much from off the ocean, we could see temperatures warm up into the 70s at least away from the ocean and we should be dry until a weak front arrives at the end of next week with a few showers. The long range looks warm for the beginning of May and we will see how long that holds before blocking comes back at some point.
