WEEKEND WEATHER, TODAY LOOKS GOOD BUT OFFSHORE LOW BRINGS CLOUDS SUNDAY

Yesterday’s cold front is now pretty much gone and there are no issues for today with sunshine for much of the day and temperatures in the 80s. The winds will be turning to north and north east in response to low pressure that is developing well out in the ocean. There was some concern for tropical or subtropical development from this and while it is still possible, it appears that the chances for that to happen are diminishing. Still the low will be an issue for Sunday as it moves northwestward. While it will remain far enough offshore, it will be close enought to start spinning clouds back westward late tonight and Sunday to the coast and spreading inland on Sunday. There will be bands of showers that will be arcing westward from off the ocean and 1 or 2 of those bands could sweep inland to just west of New York City for Sunday.

In terms of overall conditions it is a bit tricky because low clouds coming in can be tough for the sun to break through and i can envision a scenario where it its mainly overcast with a few breaks of sun along the coast including Long Island, Connecticut, Coastal and Northeast New Jersey in between any shower bands, and more on the order of Partly Sunny inland in New Jersey and the inland areas of Lower Hudson Valley.
gfs42You can see the GFS for 2pm Sunday does show some measurable precip with the offshore low in scattered patches. So the mention of possible showers was worth including in the forecast. Sunday night the low pulls away and that sets up for a nice Monday. The next cold front approaches with the chance for showers and thunderstorms later Monday night or during the day Tuesday. Lower humidity finally gets in here for Wednesday through Friday though we will have to watch and see if the front winds up getting hung up along the coast for awhile.
