Weekend Outlook Warm To Colder Weather

We head into a split weekend with Saturday being the last day of this warm three day stretch. To the west we continue to see a strong storm moving through the upper Midwest. There is a large spread in temperatures from the 70s ahead of the weather system to 20s and 30s behind it.

weekend outlook

Blizzard conditions occured today from Eastern South Dakota northeast through much of Minnesota and Northwestern Wisconsin. To the east we have an ocean storm that has been acting as a block and holding the dry air firm along the east coast with nearly clear skies from Maine to Florida. That will last through the daytime on Saturday. Temperatures tonight will be in the 40s and highs Saturday again will be in the 60s with sunshine for most of the day.

Radars here in the east will be quiet until Saturday evening when the weather front to the west approaches and moves through. There will be some showers with that Saturday night as low pressure redevelops in Southern New England. Rain showers might change to snow showers in parts of Northwest New Jersey and the Hudson Valley early Sunday morning. This won’t amount to anything though we could see the ground whitened up in some elevated areas.

Sunday and Monday will be cold with temperatures just in the 40s and nights in the 20s to lower 30s. The cold air will last into midweek. Low pressure is forecast to develop in the Southern Plains and head toward the Great Lakes and then redevelop along the coast on Thanksgiving day. The GFS model is the fastest of all the models and wants to race precipitation in here Wednesday night.

weekend weather

There is some uncertainty here due to how models handle the upper air storm that is moving overhead this weekend. The European and Canadian weather models hold that storm in longer in the northeast which forces development further south and it takes longer. Either way it seems we are setting up for a chilly rain here for Thanksgiving day. We also may probably have to consider whether there could be a brief period of snow or ice inland Wednesday night if precipitation were to come in quickly.  We will be discussing this further over the weekend.

In the meantime there will be some substantial lake effect snows and also in Northeast NY and Northern Vermont and New Hampshire. This will probably get the ski resorts going. Here are the latest SNOWFALL FORECAST MAPS for all of the northeast. Some areas will receive over a foot of snow.
