Week Starts Cold But Finishes Warmer With Rain Chances

Snow & Ice to Rain Inland Tuesday

We hit bottom this morning across Eastern Pennsylvania in the teens to near 20 degrees and we have a cold day. At least we are seeing some veiled sunshine but clouds will be increasing as we move through the day. A disturbance is moving out of the Ohio Valley and into the Mid Atlantic states. A warm front is developing across that region and that front will eventually start moving northward tonight and Tuesday. Temperatures today will have a tough time getting much above the upper 20s and lower 30s.

As the overall pattern over North America start to take the look of approaching spring, we will be battling warm fronts that will try to move northward but will have a difficult time advancing. This will lead to what I often refer to as gloom and doom conditions where clouds dominate and we get into rounds of precipitation. Such is the case for late tonight and Tuesday as the front pushes northward.

The cold air mass overhead will move offshore later today and tonight but some of that colder air will remain stubborn inland. Precipitation will arrive Tuesday morning and it could start out as some snow or sleet and then change to freezing rain and rain. I’m not anticipating any serious problems with this as the low levels of the atmosphere warm albeit slowly. Temperatures tonight will be in the mid 20s to near 30 for lows.

Precipitation develops Tuesday morning from south to north. Any snow and ice changes over to rain fast near the coast but does last a little longer inland. Winter Weather Advisories may go up for short time during Tuesday until temperatures rise above 32. We should eventually see highs reach the upper 30s to mid 40s.

The first round of rain should be done by Wednesday morning and we will see a break but there is another low and another warm front to contend with. Showery rains could come back Wednesday night. Wednesday highs will be in the mid 40s north to lower 50s South Jersey and points south. Showery rains are likely to continue Thursday into Friday with warmer then normal temperatures. We could see some 60s in southern areas of New Jersey and Pennsylvania Thursday with upper 40s to mid 50s north.
