Warmer Through The Weekend As Heatwave Gets Underway Sunday

Some Severe Weather Risk Along The Way

Yesterday;s cold front has now passed offshore and we have a nice weather day ahead. Skies have cleared out for the most part and we should see partly to mostly sunny skies to finish of the week. Highs this aftewrnoon will be mostly in the mid to upper 80s but we are going to see humidity levels down today making things more comfortable. Local sea breezes will develop along coastal areas during the afternoon and evening hours and temperatures near the coast will likely be in the 70s. Tonight we will see nothing more than some passing clouds across Eastern Pennsylvania to Southern New England. Most lows will be in the low to middle 60s.

Over the weekend we will be watching a strengthening ridge or high pressure area in the Deep South. This upper high will  build and shift northward into the Central Appalachians and this forces the upper air flow from Canada to retreat back into Canada at least through the middle part of next week. This basically cuts off most moisture and it also causes the atmosphere to heat up.

The surface and upper high remaining basically stationary through the middle of next week means we are set up for a heatwave of 3 to 4 days with temperatures topping out in the 90s during the day. Around the edges of the upper ridge we do have a couple of upper air disturbances that will be moving through Southeastern Canada and into New England Saturday and Sunday.

The Storm Prediction Center is indicating a marginal to slight risk for severe weather for much of Upstate NY extending as far south as Northeastern Pennsylvania and Northern New Jersey. This is mainly for Saturday night into early Sunday morning as a disturbance heads across Southeastern Canada to New England. The risk shifts east and south Sunday

The risk for isolated severe thunderstorms will still be in play for Sunday. This time it will be mainly from NYC north and east to Eastern New York and much of New England. In both cases any severe storms are likely to be scattered in nature and I would favor the idea of thunderstorms being more to the north and northeast and not reach too far south. For now we will mention a low chance for a thunderstorm Saturday night and Sunday just in case.

Regardless of the small risk of a thunderstorm, the weekend is going to be dry 99 percent of the time. We will have a good deal of sunshine Saturday and temperatures will be topping out in the upper 80s and lower 90s. Sunday everyone will reach the low and middle 90s with mainly sunny skies and again the outside chance for an isolated severe thunderstorm in the afternoon.

The heat continues next week and we will see sunshine, hot temperatures, and little if any shower or thunderstorm activity Monday through Wednesday. High temperatures will be in the mid to upper 90s Monday and Tuesday and low to middle 90s Wednesday. There is an outside chance that some hot spots in New Jersey for example could see highs close to 100 degrees Monday and/or Tuesday. Add the humidity and it will feel like its 105 degrees or higher. A backdoor front could bring some thunderstorms late Wednesday and slightly cooler air Thursday and Friday.
