President’s Day Weekend Forecast

Rain Ends Very Cold Air Follows Into Holiday Weekend Warmer Sunday Monday

This winter the connections to arctic air coming down from the north has been a  rare occurrence. The last cold arctic high came down in mid December and we reached the lowest temperatures of the winter back on December 19th for most places in the Northeast. Lows in our area were in the teens to single digits. Since then cold days have been few and far between and no where close to the levels set back nearly 2 months ago. This Saturday morning forecast lows will be in the single digits and low teens for our area and Upstate NY and interior New England will see temperatures below zero and even double digit below zero. Once again the cold air comes in and moves out quickly so this cold will not be sustained.

Finally the rain has ended across the area as it hung around a bit longer especially along the coast. Radars show the rains have moved offshore with some lingering showers in Southeast Virginia and into North Carolina but here too the rain should end soon. Lake effect snows are firing up in Southwest NY and in Northwest Pennsylvania as advertised.

Tonight we should slowly clear out as the back edge of the clouds to the west moves offshore. Once that happens temperatures will drop into the mid 20s to lower 30s. This sets us up for cold and breezy Friday with some sunshine. However temperatures are likely to go nowhere all day and the drop to the lows of the month and the winter on Saturday morning.

Saturday will be a cold day with sunshine. Highs will rebound from the cold morning lows and head back to the lower 30s. This shot of cold air moves out so fast that some clouds will likely come in Saturday night and last through at least part of Sunday (though we should see some sun).Temperatures Sunday will rise up through the 40s in most places and might even get close to 50 if we get enough sun.

Sunday night a weak cold front will move through with another colder high moving in behind it for Monday. The air with the high is not as cold as the shot of air coming for Friday into Saturday so highs will be back to more seasonal levels in the upper 30s and lower 40s with sunshine for much of the day.

4 days of dry weather will come to an end next Tuesday as the next low crosses the Great Lakes into New England and a cold front brings some showers late Tuesday into Wednesday. The front moves south and eventually stalls as another high with colder air comes for the second half of next week. Fronts have been stalling and producing waves lately though weather models seem to suppress this next front rather far to the south. We will see what happens but right now it is conceivable that we will only see rain for one day next week rather than 4 like this week.
