Tropical Storm Lane Pacific Moving Westward

Subtropical Storm Ernesto in the North Central Atlantic has completed the transition to a tropical storm with winds of 45 mph. Ernesto is accelerating to the northeast and will approach England & Ireland later Saturday and Saturday night with some rain and wind. This is the 4th system this season to be subtropical at some stage of the tropical storm life cycle.

Meanwhile there is a tropical wave east of the Windward Islands that is producing showers and thunderstorms as it moves slowly to the west. Upper air winds are not favorable for development at the moment. The wave should head into the Eastern Caribbean early next week.

Meanwhile out in the Pacific we have Tropical Storm Lane with winds of 70 mph strengthening rapidly at the moment and it should become a hurricane soon. Lane is moving westward and looks to take a track like Hurricane Hector passing south of Hawaii sometime next week.

WESTERN ATLANTIC TROPICAL SATELLITE

Back to the Atlantic tropics, even though we are 5 storms into the name list there is this perception that the season is below average. So far it has not been the case. A colder ocean in the Tropical Atlantic and Saharan dust have combined with strong upper air winds to prevent development in the major development region. Instead we have been seeing tropical storms forming in the Subtropical Atlantic and in Ernesto’s case on the northern edge of the warmer Atlantic Ocean waters. There some signs that the conditions that have held development back in areas south of 30 degrees north could be relaxing somewhat in the coming weeks. With all these troughs in the East at least they have all come without a tropical storm in the mix.
