Tropical Storm Karl & Depression Julia
Tropical Depression Julia is still hanging on as thunderstorms did flare up on the eastern and northeastern side of the center. However we still have some strong westerly shear going on and these thunderstorms flare up and get blown away to the east. The center is essentially going nowhere at the moment. It will continue to meander off the Southeast coast through Sunday.

DISCUSSION AND 48-HOUR OUTLOOK ------------------------------ At 500 PM EDT (2100 UTC), the center of Tropical Depression Julia was located near latitude 30.5 North, longitude 76.3 West. The depression is moving toward the northwest near 1 mph (2 km/h), and a slow motion toward the northwest and north is expected during the next couple of days. Maximum sustained winds are near 30 mph (45 km/h) with higher gusts. Little change in strength is forecast during the next 48 hours, but Julia is expected to become a remnant low tonight. The estimated minimum central pressure is 1010 mb (29.83 inches). HAZARDS AFFECTING LAND ---------------------- None.
Tropical Storm Karl is still a sheared system and in a hostile environment. By Monday it should be far enough west of the upper low to the north of it that it has some room to organize. Until then it will just hold its own as it moves west southwest. The further south it gets could be important in the longer term.

DISCUSSION AND 48-HOUR OUTLOOK ------------------------------ At 500 PM AST (2100 UTC), the center of Tropical Storm Karl was located near latitude 18.1 North, longitude 40.4 West. Karl is moving toward the west near 13 mph (20 km/h), and this general motion is expected to continue during the next couple of days. Maximum sustained winds are near 45 mph (75 km/h) with higher gusts. Karl is forecast to begin to strengthen on Monday. Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 230 miles (370 km) from the center. The estimated minimum central pressure is 1005 mb (29.68 inches).
