Temperatures Set To Increase Next Few Days

Mid to Upper 90s Friday With High Humidity

The beautiful dry air mass that has been with us is now departing to the east. This means that over the next few days we will see temperatures and humidity levels increase. Today we will have sunshine and dew points will be edging higher into the upper 50s and lower 60s which is still somewhat comfortable but the uptrend is clear. Temperatures today will be in the low to mid 80s. The Northeast and Mid Atlantic remain void of thunderstorm activity so radars will remain quiet. South winds will keep temperatures at the shore a few degrees lower. Most lows tonight will be in the mid 60s to low 70s with nothing more than some passing clouds.

WEATHER RADAR

You will definitely notice the higher humidity Thursday as dew points reach the mid to upper 60s. The atmosphere is still stable so there will be no thunderstorm activity to worry about. It will be a day of sunshine and afternoon highs will reach the upper 80s to around or just over 90 degrees in a few places. Sea breezes at the beaches will once again keep the coast a little bit cooler.

Friday will be a very hot and very humid day as the heatwave in the Mississippi Valley reaches briefly to the East Coast. We will gradually see the ridge building in the Eastern US weaken and shift westward which limits the number of hot days with 90 degree plus highs. Highs Friday will reach the middle and upper 90s in many locations. It might be a little cooler along the shore with local sea breezes but not much cooler.

A series of upper air disturbances riding over the top of the ridge of high pressure aloft will set off thunderstorms beginning Friday afternoon and evening. The Storm Prediction Center is indicating a marginal risk for isolated severe thunderstorms from Northeast Pennsylvania and Northern New Jersey northeastward to cover all of New England and Long Island.

A weather front will move southward Friday night into Saturday and stall out just to the south across Maryland and Delaware. It will turn winds more southeast Saturday and that will help to hold the temperatures down. We will see clouds and some sunshine Saturday with highs in the upper 80s to some lower 90s inland though it will be cooler at the shore. There is the risk for scattered thunderstorms in the afternoon & evening.

Sunday we will need to watch closely another disturbance that will be moving along in the flow and the chance we could see a complex of stronger thunderstorms move through at some point during the day. This will limit how high temperatures go and we also likely have the risk that some thunderstorms in this complex could be strong or even severe, opening the door for the chance for heavy rain and flash flooding as well. We will watch and see how models handle this over the next few days. For now we will call for shower and thunderstorm risk Sunday with highs mostly in the 80s.
