Smokey Skies to the South

Sunshine Returns Warmer Temperatures Week Ahead

Little Rain Risk Until Late Week

Now that we are past the rain and thunderstorms of the past few days we are going to see improvement today with no worse than partly sunny skies in Eastern Pennsylvania to Southern New England. However when you look at the latest satellite loops you will notice the milky streaks of what appears to be cloud cover but in reality is a reflection of smoke from wild fires in Central Canada. The loop illustrates the interaction of a strong upper low in Eastern Canada and the large circulation.

Northwest winds aloft extend all the way south to Florida which is where the wild fires smoke is creating hazy sky conditions. The Northeast and Northern Mid Atlantic are shielded from this hazy smoke at least for now thanks to the strength of the upper low to the north. Temperatures today will be on the cool side with gusty northwest winds and highs in the upper 60s and lower 70s. Smoke becomes an issue in sky conditions from southernmost New Jersey south and southwestward.

SATELLITE WITH LIGHTNING STRIKES

WEATHER RADAR

Radars are showing some scattered areas of showers in Upstate New York & New England and we suspect that any isolated showers today will be well to the north. Skies should be clear tonight with most lows in the mid to upper 40s inland and mostly lower 50s coast and warmer urban areas. Monday will be partly to mostly sunny with less wind and it will be a little warm with highs in the 70s.

We do not see any real weather issues through at least Thursday. High pressure settles off the Southeast US Coast. The jet stream flow pulls northward into Canada with a ridge of high pressure in the Eastern US holding firm through Thursday. This means no rain in the forecast, sunshine is in the forecast and temperatures will be warming up considerably.

For the first time this spring we are finally going to string together several days of 80 degree plus highs beginning Tuesday when high temperatures will reach the low and middle 80s. It will be cooler though along south and east facing shorelines of New Jersey and Long Island. Wednesday highs will be a little higher with temperatures reaching the middle and perhaps even some upper 80s. Warm spots might even hit 90 degrees for the first time this spring.

A weather front is going to drop southward Thursday in upstate New York however the strong ridge in the Eastern US should keep it from moving south. Any shower or thunderstorm activity likely will be in New York State north of Interstate 90 Thursday. Eastern Pennsylvania to Southern New England will remain no worse than partly sunny and we could see highs reach the upper 80s and lower 90s over many areas.

Friday we start to see the ridge weakening along the east coast and that will allow a weather front to approach. Friday should be partly sunny with highs in the mid to upper 80s though we see the chance for late day thunderstorms especially inland of the coast. There will likely be a higher chance for showers and thunderstorms Saturday as the front nears and then heads offshore by next Sunday.
